Many of my students enter our school with math skills far below grade level. Within two years they are expected to complete the NYS Math Regents curriculum and pass their state exam; this is a challenge for many of them who enter 9th grade with a 4th grade math level. Over the years, I have discovered that one way to help struggling students pass the state regent’s exam is by giving them a calculator to aide in computations. Additionally the graphing calculator allows students to have visual representations of abstract concepts right in front of them. Passing the Math Regents is one of the requirements students need to graduate high school and go on to post secondary education and training programs.
