We are in need of literature which represents the diversity of our students, their families and their migration, immigration and/or refugee journeys. Within this unit of inquiry students endure an understanding of how migration reveals and responds to opportunities and challenges. Students investigate the reasons people move throughout the world, they learn and develop empathy as to how it may be to adjust to a new home while also exploring the concept of causation and extending their thinking to the effects that movement of people has on communities, cultures and individuals. It is important that the literature that we highlight and share with our students during this exploration is culturally relevant and responsive. The tiles selected for this project are just that, they feature local immigrant communities and experiences, celebrating local authors and illustrators! Everyone has a story to tell, thank you for both broadening our students understanding of and validating the stories that are shared across the pages of these beautiful books!
