Over the last couple of years, content standards and teaching methodologies have changed drastically and rigor and accountability have become household terms. Students are expected to have knowledge depth in all subject areas as well as an ability to apply and synthesize learned content in the modern-age. Classrooms are increasingly utilizing and relying on technology to meet the demands and expectations of common core curriculum and the needs of society today.
All students should be able to access and utilize technology in a meaningful and productive way that allows them to participate fully within the classroom. Students who come to my room for assistance currently do not have many options for technological use. According to the Department of Education, “…technology ushers in fundamental structural changes that can be integral to achieving significant improvements in productivity. Used to support both teaching and learning, technology infuses classrooms with digital learning tools, such as computers and hand held devices...”
With new desktops, an iPad, and accompanying accessories I will be able to allow an entire group of students to work on research projects simultaneously or listen to a story using an audio file. Students will be able to work cooperatively in Google Drive and will be able to research topics of interest, as well as those assigned to them. They will be able to work in computer literacy programs to develop skills that are necessary in classrooms, specifically when it comes to state testing. Students struggling with reading/math will be able access applications, software programs, and websites designed designed to build fluency in needed areas such as Lexia, IXL, RAZ Kids, audio books, and so much more.
All of my students need additional time and opportunity to practice and use technology in order to build their confidence and willingness to learn independently.
