We want our community to set students up for success. Often times students come to school with many things on his or her mind; conflict at home/homelessness, hunger, or lack of sleep. The students need to feel welcomed and wanted at school. We need to meet the children's basic needs before any effective learning can happen. These materials will help students regulate their minds and bodies to be ready for learning. If a student is feeling mad, rather than yelling or being harmful, they could take a ride on the stationary bike until they are ready to rejoin the class. The glitter wands, putty, breathing spheres and bubble timers can be used to help slow a students thoughts and focus on something other than the overwhelming emotion he or she is feeling. These are much better solutions than escalating the behavior by getting into a power struggle with a student. Students are allowed to feel sad, mad, worried, etc. We need to give them access to materials that will help them feel better!! :) Many students need to move often during the day and it can become disruptive to his or her learning. The bouncy bands and rocking floor chairs can help provide the movement that is needed for students to stay on task without removing them from the class or the lesson.
