More and more, we find ourselves being presented with a world that doesn't make sense. We are confronted with questions, questions like: Who are our heroes, and what does it mean to be a hero? How do we deal with a corrupt governmental system? How does our childhood affect who we become when we grow up? How does a person deal with trauma? Can history inform our present? I believe that I won't have to keep my student's love of reading a secret with a unit on graphic novels. I plan to use these graphic novels to not only broaden my students horizons and practice reading skills, but also help them to discuss and think about issues similar to those listed above. My students will read, research, discuss, and write throughout this graphic novel unit. Digging deep to wrestle with the important questions of our world. The fact that we are working with graphic novels will be a tremendous boon to my reluctant reader population, not to mention my own passion for this unit. Graphic novels played a huge part in my own life, both in my reading development and the pleasure I derive from reading. I am so excited to expose my students to this world of graphic novels.
