My students need books they can read in their home languages during silent reading time. I am teaching them English, but research shows that increasing literacy in home language will help them learn to read and speak better English. My students love to read materials in their home languages. I have books in English, but I have very few books in Spanish and none in Arabic. What I want is to increase my library to get them to read books that interest them. We have silent reading time at my school. Right now, some students with low levels of English are staring into space with English books on their desks. I have seen these same students devour grade-level texts in their home languages, but I don't have those materials in my classroom. I want to provide that for them. I want my students to have books that appeal to them in languages that they understand so that they learn to enjoy reading. By having books to read it will affect how my students view reading and make an impact on other subjects. If you begin to love reading, then you will want to read more books because you will love the excitement that can come from a book you love.
