When I think back to when I was in school and how long each day I had to spend sitting in an uncomfortable desk, it helps me begin to understand why my students have trouble sitting still and focused for longer periods of time. Flexible seating has become a BIG thing in classrooms these days and it is backed by an abundance of success stories, all of which include an increase in focus and decrease in many negative behavior problems. For my students specifically, flexible seating is GREAT for sensory output which is especially helpful for those students with ASD, ADHD, and ADD. When given the choice, movement, comfort, and sense of community that comes with flexible seating I feel my students will not only thrive in my classroom, but they will LOVE coming to school every day. This project is strictly a focus on seating options and items that my student's will use each day. I have chosen a variety of seating options that range from a high top table and chairs to a comfy bean bag and butterfly seats as well as other options. My students are constantly wanting to sit in my rolling chair or in the single rocking chair we have in class and are far more engaged when I allow them to do so. Being able to give my students these options will bring a whole new feel to my classroom and I can't wait to give the gift of choice and flexibility to my students!
