I have been teaching recorders in third grade for 17 years, and, every year I love the moment, after weeks of mastering how to read music and manage the fingering on the recorder, they finally play a song they recognize. The wide-eyed look of accomplishment and joy is priceless. Their pride in playing pieces such as "Jingle Bells" and "Ode to Joy" for the winter festival program is not to be missed. By learning how to play recorders, students increase their instructional focus, refine fine motor skills, and master new areas of expression that bring joy and pride to their lives.
