I am building a curriculum and learning space where students experience authentic, real-world mathematics and construct the meaning of mathematics as a tool for their own lives and their community. My students bring knowledge and experiences from their homes and communities that can be leveraged as resources for mathematics teaching and learning. Mathematics is not a walled-off subject on its own! Use of technology will help my students make meaningful connections between mathematics they are learning and their lived experiences. The goal is to help them see mathematics as a tool that is relevant and powerful for solving problems they experience in their community and the world they live in. My students will use the Chromebooks to: * Examine the problem of trash/waste in NYC by researching data (i.e. quantity of waste generated and recycled in NYC) *Investigate whether using reusable mug cups are worth the cost using mathematics. Algebraically representing the costs using Desmos, an online graphing program * Create a media production of perplex mathematical problems they encounter in their own lives and develop a mathematical solutions Currently, my students are using outdated laptops that are malfunctioning (missing keyboards, etc.) and eating up significant amount of learning time. Lack of technology has limited my students’ learning opportunity. Your generous donation will help my students experience authentic, real-world mathematics and broaden their engagement and participation as brilliant mathematicians!
