Meaningful demonstrations and projects help students internalize concepts. Energy and power are complicated ideas which have many difficult facets associated with them from power to energy to watts and joules. As it relates to our environment, wind, solar and hydro electric power offer us great opportunities for helping our nation. Seeing a mechanism upon which a student may interact (they will use these things during labs) will further their understanding in a meaningful and relevant way. The students construct basic lamps using paper glue, copper tape, resistors and LEDs which they tie into the demo generators. These lamps they may then take home as a tangible reminder of their lab. We use these kits to augment traditional lecture and repetition strategies as they are more successful in helping these kids do well in school and succeed later in life.
