We are requesting a class set of A Long Way Gone, an amazing memoir by Ismael Beah, who details his story of being forced to become a child soldier in the Sierra Leone Civil War. This novel will be used to compare and contrast stories with other memoirs studied in class, such as excerpts from Malala, My Forbidden Face, and Night by Elie Wiesel, to name a few. Students will learn about different cultures and historical events, as well as connect these stories thematically and draw personal connections. This story will impact students because of its recent occurrence, emphasis on family, loss of innocence, and eventual redemption. It is important for students to realize the events going on in all corners of the globe and see a world much bigger than their own. Students will then use their knowledge to craft their own memoir writing assignments to share stories of significant times in their own lives. We will also use this to connect to historical time periods and figures being studied in their Social Studies classes to focus on the personal story behind the events.
