Our school is fortunate to have an AED. An AED is an "Automatic External Defibrillator". When someone is in cardiac arrest, the AED delivers a shock to the heart, similar to jump-starting a car. Sudden Cardiac Arrest can happen anytime, anywhere and to anyone. When an AED is readily available, survival rates increase dramatically. The AED uses voice prompts to assist the rescuer, and so it can easily be operated by trained and even untrained persons, including students. The AED uses special adhesive pads that are attached to the victim's chest. The pads enable the shock to be delivered from the machine to the victim. However, these AED pads do have expiration dates and ours will soon expire. We will need to replace the expired AED pads to ensure that, in the event of a cardiac arrest, the AED will be fully functional. In short, if the AED pads are not working, then the AED will not work either. Hopefully, we will not ever need to use our AED. But we Must Always be prepared to help our school community in the event of a cardiac arrest.
