  • Empowering Students Through Decodable Texts

    Funded Dec 31, 2024

Thank you so much for your support of our reading department! These texts are ideal for our students because they make reading accessible as their skills advance. Students are able to practice the phonics skills they are using in intervention with real books! Classroom teachers are also able to use these books for their small group instruction as well making your donation impact our entire building. Thank you so much for your generosity and happy new year!”

    With gratitude,

  • Empowering Students Through Decodable Texts

    Funded Sep 3, 2024

We want to thank you so much for your generosity. I can't begin to tell you what it means to these kids to have texts that they are able to access at their fingertips! They are sweet, hard-working, highly intelligent kids who sometimes just need a little boost, and you helped to give that to them. Our classroom is a better place because of your awesome contribution.”

    With gratitude,

  • Empowering Literacy Through Decodable Readers

    Funded Aug 14, 2024

What a wonderful way to start the new year! I am so grateful to you for the fulfillment of this project. This very generous gift will put books directly into the hands of my students. My students will benefit greatly from having access to decodable readers that reinforce the phonics strategies we are learning in class as well as practice their fluency skills. These books are high interest for our most striving readers. Thank you again!”

  • Help us Score in Literacy!

    Funded Mar 23, 2019

Thank you so much for your generous donation toward our after school program club, Books in Motion. Because of your donation we were able to get highly engaging texts into the hands of our students and let them take these books home to read again and again. The students were able to read sports themed books by Mike Lupica with the support of their teacher. They discussed many of the features of fiction text including, plot, setting, and character. They were also able to get outside and learn how to play the sports highlighted in each of the texts. This way the students were getting to fully engage in the text in a more exciting and meaningful way.”

  • Enter A Different World - Read!

    Funded Dec 20, 2018

Thank you so much for your support of literacy and the students at our school. We had such a great time over the past few months reading together and sharing our ideas and thoughts about the books you so generously donated toward. We have read Goosebumps, Matilda, and The Chronicles of Narnia.

Not only did our students get to discuss a longer text over time, but they got to focus on character development, plot, theme, author's message, and much, much more! We also were able to watch the movies made based on each of those three texts. It was wonderful to see the students pointing out the differences and similarities between each book and movie. Students came to realize that there is a whole lot more to the character development in a text and some events were even left out of the movie entirely!

What was also amazing about this project is that we did not group students homogeneously. We welcomed students reading above and below grade level, some with disabilities and some without. The students supported one another and found a love of reading just for fun!

We can't wait until our next book club coming up in April and this time it has a sports theme!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Graveline

  • Making Smart Decisions About Managing Money

    Funded Sep 7, 2018

Thank you so much for your contribution toward financial literacy education at Memorial School. Our third, fourth, and fifth grade student were able to not only participate in Junior Achievement's More than Money program, centered around making smart decisions about managing money, but gain access to many supplemental resources to help them learn everything from identifying and counting coins to understanding debits and credits.

The students were so excited to lean how to play the amazing games that supplemented their learning. They had so much fun applying their addition and subtraction skills in a more realistic setting.

Moving forward, we plan to work with Junior Achievement again in the near future. We will be able to service even more students at Memorial School and go deeper into the curriculum.”

  • Infusing Literacy Through the Art of Performance

    Funded Feb 6, 2018

Students in the first and second grade had a blast performing their book adaptations for guests, parents, and peers. They worked diligently during their sessions with the artist in residence to fully comprehend the text they chose as a class. Through their physical engagement, children were led through a process of self-discovery that helped develop physical awareness, cooperative learning skills, self-confidence, patience, and self-control. Each workshop session included theater arts warm-ups and performance exercises that helped students develop public speaking and dramatic arts skills.

It was amazing to see how the students rose to the occasion of performing in front of an audience of over 200 people. They developed the skills needed to comprehend the story in order to remember their lines and project their voices so the whole audience could hear. Even the most shy students and those that are typically difficult to engage in traditional classroom activities were excited to be a part of the performance.

These students will take with them the confidence they gained in public speaking and being in front of an audience for years to come!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Graveline
