I truly believe that if I can build a classroom culture for reading, my students will thrive. As a 5th grade teacher, I want to expose my students to volumes of literature that they can be excited about reading independently. Research states that there is a direct correlation between reading volume and reading achievement(Allington,2021). The majority of my students are reading two to three grades levels below 5th grade coming out of the pandemic. As a reading teacher, I know how important it is to have independent reading books available for each student to read during school as well as at home. Currently, our class library as well as our school library has limited book titles and high-interest level books for my students. It is critical that we get high-interest books into my student's hands to read independently as soon as possible. During our reading block, there is a designated time for students to drop everything and read. Once they have read their book, they have a reading choice board activity that they complete with each book. The students love completing these reading activities because it allows them to interact with their book of choice, gain comprehension of the text, and most importantly, they CHOOSE the activity that they wanted to complete with their book.
