Technology is the face of education in the 21st century. Technology has easily replaced paper and pencil in the average classroom. To keep students thriving and ahead of the constantly changing times on a daily basis, they need laptops readily accessible inside the classroom.
Each 9 weeks, my students are required to conduct research and complete a project and/or research paper for a different decade, without the availability of accurate technology in the classroom.
Students work both collaboratively and individually on research of the decades, beginning with the 1920's through the 1950's in seventh grade and the 1960's through 1990's in eighth grade. In addition to scheduling research days in the library and a shared computer lab, we have 3 student computers available for classroom use, 1 teacher computer, and 1 additional computer for the projector, which I assume is standard for most classrooms. However, my kids are not your average standard kids, I work with the gifted and talented population of the school, who are curious and constantly questioning everything. I would like for my students to be able to independently research, seek, and find the answers to all their burning questions by having technology at their fingertips. I feel that some students are falling behind in technological innovations due to not having access to a computer at home; therefore, school is the only place where they are going on-line. I do not want my students to feel like a lack of technology is an excuse for why they can not achieve greatness in everything they do.
Therefore, I feel that the addition of a classroom set of 10 laptops will assist in my goal to drive my students to properly use technology as a tool to guide research in the 21st century.
