I am excited to be teaching fourth and fifth grade science this year. As a PAEMST awardee I have been able to make science teaching a focus for my students. This year our school combined the fourth and fifth grade for science which has allowed for more flexible grouping and a chance for meaningful discussions that span more than one grade level. Science kits allow me to gain access to quality materials so I can focus on instruction and scientific questioning so my students can think deeper and more about the content at hand. This kit will allow students to look at interactions within and between systems of matter and energy to produce observable and predictable patterns that comprise all of nature. The study of systems and interactions is fundamental in science. This unit provides a variety of concrete experiences that allow students to explore how Earth is both part of a larger system and is itself composed of interconnected systems. Students will also examine the nearest and most familiar bodies to Earth and consider the observable effects they have on Earth. In a series of hands-on lessons, students will have experiences with modeling, scale, and cause-and-effect relationships. Students will record their investigations, observations, and new questions and ideas in their science notebooks, which will help prepare them to conduct their own investigations. The culminating experiment will allow students to practice using real world materials while they learn about the universe and how it impacts the earth. Students will see their own engineering ideas come to life and make something tangible for a project that addresses the universe we live in.
