Today's children do not get the amount of recess and exercise like I did as a child. Today's kids are expected to sit for longer periods of time and taught to take tests and to practice by taking more tests. Along with providing my students daily movement activities between lessons, I want my students to be able to sit comfortably when learning. By offering my students a variety of flexible seating options, I am catering to their individual learning styles. Some kids prefer to stand and work, some kids just need to wiggle or bounce when they work, some kids work best by lying on the floor, or sitting in a bean bag chair with a clip board. I want to provide my students with the best possible environment to enhance their learning. I know that if I am comfortable on my couch or at my desk in a cushioned chair, I work better and stay focused longer. I want my students to be responsible for their learning and to choose what is the best seating arrangement for them to get the most out of my teaching/their learning. Students who are comfortable and not forced to sit in the same desk and chair all day will be more engaged in their learning. I have many students who are often standing at their desks to work, however, they are having to lean down. I would like to at least two stand up desks so students who prefer to work while standing can comfortably stand. I would also like the exercise ball chairs for my students who tend to have a hard time sitting still while learning. These chairs will give students the opportunity to slightly bounce or rock while doing their work.
