Federico Garcia Lorca Elementary is a 96% low income, CPS school located in the Avondale neighborhood of Chicago. My classroom is home to 120 of the most charismatic, creative, and uniquely imaginative 7th and 8th grade students every day. I am a departmentalized Science teacher who integrates each aspect of STEAM (Science, Tech, Engineering, Arts, and Math) into my classroom on a daily basis. In my experience, the best way to incorporate those components is by giving my students a choice and a voice in the classroom through Project Based Learning. To make learning impactful, students need hands-on experience and real world application. They are allowed to display their comprehension of content in a variety of ways that are interesting and relevant to them. When students truly put themselves into a project, you find out what they know. In the process, you often get to discover who your students really are.
