My students come from a wide variety of backgrounds. They bring with them various experiences and cultures. The greatest commonality that can be found is their love of technology. It motivates them to move, learn and share. They know how to use a phone to Tweet and Snapchat, but they don’t know how to file share, locate information, or use our district's online message boards. College and career ready students must have experience working with all forms of technology. They need to be able to work with a global mindset. Having more computers in my classroom means that my students could learn with other students around the world. They would participate in various group projects that allow them to work on tasks like meaningful research projects. They would become proficient with office documents in Excel and Word. Ultimately, they would have an outlet to share their creativity with the world around them in a safe and secure way. These learned skills would follow them to successful college experiences, as well as life beyond. My fifth graders must be comfortable with our district's online message boards to be successful in middle school. Computers will allow them to practice and perfect these skills. In my classroom, I currently have a 10:1 student to computer ratio. This makes it virtually impossible for my students to use technology in the classroom. For computers to be routinely used, we simply must have more. More practice with the use of computers will also teach them that while technology is an innovative way to learn it comes with responsibilities. My students must learn how to stay digitally safe.
