Between Shades of Gray is a book set during WWII and specifically discusses the experiences of young people during the annexation of the Baltic states. Although many students today face difficulties in their own lives, none compare to those faced by the young people who were being deported from their homes to the frozen tundra of Siberia. As we learn about the historical context in which the novel is set, we will also discuss the more personal realities that the characters were forced to endure. While teenagers feel lost without access to the technology to which we have all become accustomed, they will see, through the eyes of the teenagers in the novel, what life would be like without access to so much more. Food, shelter, medicine, family...all these take front stage in the story of Lina and her family. Students will undertake projects, presentations, essays and other forms of assessment to help them fully understand this tragedy that is a part of our world history. They will also gain insight into how one individual can make a difference in a seemingly hopeless situation, giving them the confidence and hope that someday they might do the same.
