This school year, my school has developed a Makerspace, coined the “Gator Garage”, which allows students the opportunity to tinker and explore. This space has been designed to promote the importance of design thinking and how technological tools can support the development of solutions to problems. This space is available for all students and teachers so that connections can be made between the STEM subjects and the content students are learning in their classrooms. This space also allows for students to explore various career pathways and develop a maker mindset. Students working in this space will increase their ability to problem solve, collaborate, and think critically - all skills needed for success in the twenty-first century. We are looking to add a variety of tools to the Garage so that students have access to all the equipment they could possibly need to make their designs reality. We are asking for a laser engraver, a mobile cart, safety glasses, and wooden pieces to give all students another way to bring their designs to life. This tool will allow students to explore technological design and then see the laser engrave their design in real time. This tool will also allow students to develop beginning knowledge of the x, y, and z axes in mathematics, and provide further application of visual and spatial understanding. Many makerspaces have listed their laser engraver as one of the most popular tools in their space and we hope this becomes just as popular in our Garage!
