Our Middle Schoolers Love Books!
Funded Jun 13, 2022My students absolutely loved these books! With these books I was able to reinforce comprehension skills we'd learned throughout the year, such as: identifying different types of conflicts, understanding the different parts of a story's plot, how the author uses conflict to move the plot along, understanding author's word choice and mood and tone. Practicing these reading skills was effortless with the engaging books from you!
The variety of levels of books helped ensure that all my students could find a book they'd enjoy. I was able to group my students together so they could help each other with the texts. They were able to learn from each other while enjoying a good book.
My students were able to see themselves represented in this group of texts. It was very powerful. The texts in our normal curriculum are not always engaging and do not have diverse characters. Because my students were able to connect to these books, they spurred deep conversations about a variety of relatable topics. Thank you so much.”

Come One, Come All to the Enthralling Literature Circles!
Funded Dec 18, 2017First of all thank you for the prompt and overwhelming support for this project. When I told my students about the project and how quickly it had been funded they were blown away. It was hard for them to understand how much love and support they could receive from people they've never met. We are all extremely excited for our new literature circles. The students, with huge smiles on their faces, are constantly asking when we can start.
I can't wait to see the collaboration and enthusiasm my students bring to literature circles. It is a great way to practice comprehension skills- like author's tone, mood, types of conflict, plot development, theme, character development and how to participate in discussions. The discussion aspect of my literature circles is key. The majority of my students are ELL and the language development that happens during literature circle discussions is a sight to behold. Normally quiet students can't hold in their excitement to share their ideas about the book. Our textbook generally offers dry, outdated text that can be overwhelming for students. So, literature circles are a breath of fresh air that allow students to engage in modern young adult books.
Literature circles also give students the chance to collaborate and learn from one another. The groups are usually 3-5 students and they work together to prepare for their biweekly discussions with me. Each student has a job to complete for the discussion that focuses on one of the comprehension skills. The student's jobs allow them to focus on one comprehension skill for each discussion session. It really allows them to have independent and group practice showing their understanding of the skill.
Thank you again for this opportunity to expand out literature circles library.”
