My project is to give my students with Autism the sensory input they have been looking for. Many people on the autism spectrum have difficulty processing everyday sensory information. Any of the senses may be over- or under-sensitive, or both, at different times. Did you know that there are actually 8 sensory systems in your body, not just 5? Our bodies take information in through sensory systems: auditory (sound/hearing), olfactory (smell), gustatory (taste), tactile (touch), vestibular (movement) and proprioception (input from muscles and joints) interoception (internal sensors indicating physiological conditions). Sensory Integration is the process your central nervous system goes through when it takes information in from your body’s 8 senses, processes that information, and then responds accordingly. When one’s central nervous system has difficulty processing any of this sensory information, the body’s responses are atypical and can be observed in motor, language, or behavioral skill difficulties. These materials could make a difference by providing the sensory input needed for my students. I am asking for a sand and water table in which we can put our tactile hands on sensory materials in it, such as rice, sand, water and so forth. We also do monthly themes such as transportation theme and would like to put toy cars in the sand for the students to find. I am requesting a lid for the water and Sand table to keep things mess free. I am asking for washable sensory play materials for my students so they can explore new hands on materials. I am requesting foam sensory play as this is something my students never played with and would enjoy very much, as it’s a novel activity which are always a hit.
