I've selected a balanced range of young adult literature and non-fiction books, and have included both Latino and Latina authors. I am asking for multiple copies of eleven different books including I Am Not Your Perfect Mexican Daughter, The Devil's Highway: A True Story, and A Place to Stand for literature circles. Current literacy education research suggests that when students are able to make authentic connections with ideas, characters, and situations presented in a text, they are more likely to engage with class objectives and activities. Yet, I hope to take this idea to a deeper level. With this project, students will reveal the transformative power of multicultural literature. By participating in collaborative literature circles, students will work together to explore the cultural and linguistic diversity that exist in the Latino community. This will create powerful learning opportunities for students to practice their speaking and listening skills. As a culminating project, students will be asked to create group presentations that argue the benefits of multicultural literature in the English curriculum and propose ways teachers and schools can create more inclusive curriculum. Their group presentations will discuss important and meaningful parts of their novel as well as include current research on multicultural education. Students will be using these texts as agents of change. Specifically, change within themselves, their school, and community.
