Our Many Faces
Funded Oct 6, 2022Our students LOVE to read! You can often catch them doing so in the most "unusual" places, like the cafeteria, the gym, or on the playground. As you know, reading can help students learn many academic skills and strategies, but it can also help them learn about life and the people around them. The books that your donation helped to provide tell about "different" people: people whose lives, lifestyles, and backgrounds differ from those of our students.
These books are helping our students recognize the differences in people and promoting acceptance of these differences. They are beginning to realize that many of the students in their own classrooms are not like them: some are from other countries or cultural backgrounds, some whose physical appearance is different from their own, some whose family make-up is different than what is considered the "norm" and some whose lifestyles are different. These books are helping the students realize that just because something is new to them personally doesn't mean it's bad, wrong, or weird. It's just different, and different is okay. Thank you for giving them that gift!”
With gratitude,

Funded Nov 9, 2020When I first saw that people had given to our library project, I was amazed! This was my first ever Donors Choose project, and I never thought that purchasing the items we requested would be possible! The students in our school were so excited to watch our experts install the television and waited on pins and needles for our school system's technology department to connect it to the Internet so that we could use it fully! Although this did not happen before they left for summer break, it finally happened last week. This means that our students will be using our gifts when school begins next month!
This school year, our media club will write, create, and produce our school's news show, The Cubs Roar, each week. This is shown every Monday morning and gives our students an update on upcoming events, news about our students and school family, and connects them to the outside world by showing segments filmed on and around our University campus with community members. It will be shown on our big screen television this year!
The students will also do things such as video projects, book talks and reviews, and slide show presentations highlighting things going on in and around the school. These things will be shown in our library, also! These things, as well as the news show, will be projected all day (by looping the presentations) in our library.
In addition to the television (and the mounting system), your kindness and generosity allowed us to purchase a small Bluetooth speaker. This is used during story times to project apps which add sound effects to stories being read as well as to listen to virtual guests reading stories! It has been a big hit, especially with our younger students!
Again, thank you for your kindness and generosity. You have touched many children and helped to excite them about coming to the library where they might see themselves "on the big screen!"”
With gratitude,
Mrs. Messina
