Diverse Books Matter!
Funded Jun 10, 2020This year my first grade students are learning virtually, which makes it challenging for me to see the impact these new, amazing books are having on them. But, believe me when I say I am trying! We have been using the new books as our Interactive Read A loud lessons every day. I read them a story via Zoom and we stop along the way to discuss our observations, connections we may have to the story, and how the text may relate to our daily lives. My class of 28 students is extremely diverse in their ethnicities. I love seeing their eyes light up when a character from the story looks like them, speaks their language or celebrates the same tradition. I will continue to use the new books for our Interactive Read a loud lessons and look forward to using them again next year when I have a new group of first grades learning in person!”

First Grade: Learning Through Exploration And Creation!
Funded Jan 31, 2018We can't thank you enough for your generosity! The materials were delivered to our classroom in big boxes and like most 6 year olds, they couldn't stand the suspense! With every box we opened, their excitement grew and grew! I'm sure their screams could be heard across town! They jumped up and down and hugged each other! It made me a little teary to see them so excited, because I know they don't have an opportunity to have new toys or games very often. My heart is full.
Our new supplies are used on a daily basis. The OSMO and Bloxels are used during our Daily 5 Readers Workshop. The students can choose the OSMO as one of their rotational choices. The legos and magnet blocks and straws-connectors are used during a free choice activity. The students love the design process. The students come up with an idea, make a plan, build and finally evaluate their projects and present to the class.
First Graders will continue exploring, testing, observing, and doing. I'm excited to see what projects they will come up with next! I can promise you the students are engaged and learning every day!”
With gratitude,
