Students will be reading these books as part of a school book club. Students will read one to two chapters each week on their own and we will come together in a zoom meeting due to COVID, to discuss the major themes and social justice issues that appear in the novel. Our current population faces some of issues of systematic racism, poverty, and social injustice. This novel will help our students see themselves as the protagonist that has a similar upbringing and lifestyle as our student population. We will discuss issues of overt/passive vs covert/aggressive racism, look into character analysis and text symbolism. I hope to start a positive conversation about social justice in all grade levels.
