Having Dr. Seuss books in my classroom library would give my students the opportunity to read books with word play. Since I teach first grade, my students need more books with rhymes and nonsense words to read. I would use these books for Read Across America Day and specific literacy units. The Lorax is a popular book to use when teaching Earth Day. This book also offers opportunities to learn about recycling, pollution and other environmental issues. I would incorporate many indoor and outdoor activities like picking up trash on the playground. Dr Seuss books are enjoyable books to read. I would use all my Dr. Seuss books for in-depth books studies, covering character traits, retelling, sequencing, problem/solution and much more. I would send the Curious George plush and books home with one student per weekend, to read with and write about their weekend together. Each child's weekend story will stay in Curious George's weekend journal. This is just a fun way to motivate my students to read over the weekends. I will change out books, so that my students are getting new books to read to Curious George.
