Our school has over 80% of it's students on free and reduced lunch. Many do not have books at home and do not go to the public library. They get their reading experiences only at school. I had one student borrow a Harry Potter book from me and he spent the next month reading it at home with mom and then re-reading it at school so that he made sure he understood what was going on. He didn't want to feel left out when the other students were talking about the story. Many times a book leaves my class library and never comes back. They connect to the books and want to keep them as if it were a treasure. It gives me a smile I can't hide when I see 2 students sharing their opinions of books while they stand in front of the class library bookcase. They get excited about the characters and the adventure.
