Help Us Prepare for the Science Fair!
Funded Feb 9, 2025Thank you so much for your support! I can’t wait to share the news with my students. Science projects are one of the most rewarding experiences for teachers and students and I can’t wait for them to feel proud and accomplished. Happy hypothesizing from an awesome 5th grade crew to come!”

Let’s Make Reading Fun Again!
Funded Aug 4, 2023Thank you so much for providing me the opportunity to introduce real books to my students. A significant consequence of the pandemic is deficits in reading at the 5th grade level. Students are inundated with phonics instruction and non-fiction comprehension passages which makes reading a chore and eliminates the enjoyment factor. I think that reading proficiency is founded on interesting and engaging materials.
With this project I can offer students a variety of Author's series, and relatable content that students can make connections with and laugh. My goal is that with my literature circle book groups, students will be able to see reading in a new light.”

Funded Feb 23, 2023Thank you so much for funding my project. Over the last few years I have noticed that students have lost interest in reading. Teaching materials at my grade level are centered around non-fiction passages, and short stories that fit a standard. Students that are behind in reading are forced into a phonics bootcamp, and small group interventions are based around building those skills, which can make reading even more challenging to hype up.
With my project I am able to introduce students to authors like Roald Dahl, or to books with subjects they can relate to. Students would never admit that they like reading but in small groups I've noticed that I am not the driving force of conversation. Students are making connections on their own, laughing at what they are reading, asking what the next book in the series is. These observations make me incredibly grateful for Donors Choose, and being afforded the opportunity to promote enjoyable reading.”

We Have a Need, a Need to Read!
Funded May 9, 2018Thank you so much for donating book collections and supplies to our class room. My students love to read in the library or spread out with the pillows for flexible seating. To start the year we studied biographies, it was really helpful that we were able to use the author's series on biographies to support our reading unit. Even though we finished the unit I have a handful of students that choose to read biographies during our silent reading time. We are currently reading the Sideways Stories from Wayside School collection by Louis Sachar as whole group, which creates an awesome transition between lunch and our reading time as well as many laughs. Students have already started inquiring about more of his books. Many of the Eyewitness Science collection are awesome supplemental materials to support our science units. As the year progresses, I can't wait to introduce other authors and genres and continue to generate excitement about reading.
I am also extremely grateful for the extra school supplies. I help coordinate our student council, and the markers and construction paper have definitely been utilized for our spirit week and fall carnival posters. Donor's Choose has really helped me build an interactive classroom with multiple resources and supplies for my students. I feel that as a newer teacher I can provide the same learning experiences and teachers that have been cultivating supplies and books for decades.”

Funded Nov 17, 2017I am humbled by the immediate generosity, this project was fully funded prior to approval! The classroom sets of supplies were immediately integrated into our student supply shelf, where students can use when needed. Projects run smoothly when everyone has their own pair of scissors or glue sticks to use. The additions to our class library and our share-and-show white boards were unanimously my class' favorite donations. We use the share-and-show white boards almost daily to review fractions, long division, and two digit multiplication. Our library has also become way more inviting. Students love to sit with clip boards and work independently in the comfy chairs or stretch out on the carpet. Personally I have found that the speaker has helped calm students down in the afternoons. They love listening to music while they work.
Many of my students described receiving our gifts like Christmas. I loved that each student found collective ownership in all of the items. They have also started to treat every material (old and new) with respect because they were able to see the determination and time it takes to receive these materials and that they don't magically appear.
This project has laid an awesome foundation for my classroom. I went from spending energy searching for basic supplies to redirecting that energy towards developing projects and additional enrichment activities. It is encouraging to see how important people from my local community and all over the country value education and share the importance I see in creating awesome learning environments for our students .”
