We are a small, suburban, charter school with an agriculture focus. Gardening is a highlight for my fourth grade students. Where else can you see kids squeal with delight over peas, zucchini, and tomatoes, except in a garden they planted. It's amazing what they will eat when they grow it themselves. As we work in the garden you would think worms were the most amazing animals in the world. Bringing agriculture to city kids, who have never sowed a seed in their lives, is very rewarding. While planning the garden my students learn many useful academic skills. They apply their knowledge of area, perimeter, and circumference, as we plan how all the plants will fit into our garden boxes. They incorporate reading and writing as they read through resources to find information about their garden plants and then write compositions about how to care for those plants. While gardening, the students develop a sense of pride and ownership towards our school, which helps them to be better students.
