This is my first year teaching first grade. I used to teach fifth grade and at the start of this year I thought, "Oh, first graders will be fine with desks...we'll put them in groups of 4 or 5, and it will be just the same as tables!" Boy, was I wrong! First graders are so much more prone to distraction. They fidget and get distracted with things inside their desks. They even fidget with their desks! Community supplies are difficult because one person moves his or her desk, and suddenly the community supplies crash and spill to the floor undoubtedly in the middle of instruction. We eat breakfast in our room, and I have a few who even stash extra breakfast food in their desks from time to time for various reasons. I've found cartons of milk, cups of yogurt, tons of graham crackers, and once an old, mushy orange! Tables will improve the environment in our room in countless ways. They will reduce transition time and thus increase instruction time for math groups with the whiteboard tables! They will allow students to practice the sharing of supplies and will encourage a community mindset. They will eliminate many distractions from inside desks to keep students focused. They will keep out unwanted critters attracted by stashed breakfast foods. They will allow for collaborative work and centers. They will create multiple engaging spaces for me and my supporting staff members to pull and work with small groups of students. They will free up space in the classroom and give me a better setup to allow for flexible seating down the road.
