  • Indigenous Education for All

    Funded Sep 11, 2023

Thank you so much for your generosity! These new books are giving students the opportunity to follow along as we read through chapters of Braiding Sweetgrass each week which can help with their retention of and focus on the text. This book offers students a new lens to use when looking at the world around them and their relationship to one another and the earth.

When we read together, one teacher reads aloud while students choose to either follow along in the books that you have provided or color a coloring page that is related to the topics we are covering in the chapter being read. When we are done reading students discuss main ideas and answer questions based on the chapter. These discussions go much better when they have had access to the text while reading.

Additionally, this book allows us to include representation of an indigenous author and the wisdom of the indigenous community to be taught to all 9th grade students at our school. This sets them up for a great foundation as they continue to work their way through our school.”

  • Using Games to Uncover Mathematical Ideas

    Funded Sep 5, 2023

Thank you so much for your generosity! My students have loved playing the new games that we received and are already coming up with great ideas for making their own versions. They love the new rotation of games to learn from and play during down time in the day. It is a unique way for them to explore mathematical ideas.

We recently played the game Chameleon as a class. Students enjoyed learning how to play the game and created their own topic cards to play with.

Our current project involves designing our own versions of Sushi-Go (I game I already had) or designing an expansion pack for another game. I have a group that was inspired by Taco-Cat-Goat-Cheese-Pizza that are having good conversations about how probability is involved in the game design. They are considering these mathematical ideas as they design their own version.

We will continue playing these games and using them to launch conversations about math and game design and inspire us as we create our own games. Thank you again for making this possible!”

  • Think. Write. Erase. Repeat.

    Funded Sep 2, 2023

Thank you so much for your donation! The students are grateful to be able to use the whiteboard markers everyday in class. Last week, my Geometry students were doing some work with comparing rectangles with an area of 24. Using whiteboard markers to draw out the different rectangles makes it easier for students to erase and try again as they are working through their thinking.

This week, my Intermediate algebra students worked at the vertical whiteboards to solve absolute value equations. Being able to stand and write helped them to feel more awake and to share ideas with one another more easily as they looked at work around the room to help them guide their process.

We will continue using these resources on a daily basis because of your generosity. Thank you!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Efteland
