Ready? Quiet on the set. And.....action!
These were probably the favorite seven words of the 28 kids who were involved in the Documentary Project! Though these words are neither exotic nor complex, these words had an entirely new meaning when used in the context of this project. Kids were Empowered.
What is the impact? There were myriad ways that the doc project changed lives. Students had ownership. Students learned a new way to use technology. Students broadened their vocabulary. Students learned how to problem solve on the spot. Students practiced skills of collaboration. Students shared compassion. Students shared laughter and questions and role playing. Students gained confidence. Students honed focus. Students explored tolerance and
The students involved in the Documentary project were from grades kindergarten through fifth. We made two short films. The first was an Interview documentary. Students were invited by flier to participate, and were released from their various classes to be in the Documentary Project class. Because this project would involve reading and writing as a prerequisite to scripting and interviewing, it fit perfectly into many of the Common Core standards for ELA (English Language Arts)across grade level.
As a group, during this ELA (English Language Arts) time for the grades, which was in the morning part of the school day, we worked on interview questions. Then, we assigned roles and positions, duties and Younger students were assigned to interview older students. All were filmed.
The second project was an action film/documentary: "An Awesome Day at MLK!"
Along with learning the technicalities of using the equipment (the GoPro camera being the favorite), the kids learned how to produce a final product that they'd never produced before! The kids had so much confidence and as a finale, we plan to share both projects on our digital boards for all to see.
This project had far-reaching results as well. One parent related that their child now considered themself a "director," and was now aware of the word "director" when watching movies at home. Some kids expressed interest in the movie industry as actors, filmmakers, directors, and camera people. Wee researched these roles, as well as stunt people producers, etc. (By the way, we now want to buy a green screen)!
What a great time! Thank you so very much DonorsChoosse and Kind Donors for making this possible. We could not have done it without you”
With gratitude,
Dr. Malloy
