  • We See Ourselves!

    Funded Mar 5, 2023

I truly believe in the goodness of others, and your kind and generous donation has underscored my belief. Thank you for being part of a wonderful project , and by default, options to enhance a future of a child!

Thank you very much....your financial gift certainly means so very much!”

    Funded Nov 30, 2022

Thank you all so verrrry much for our kind and generous donations that helped to make my dream project come true!

I can't wait to begin this fun project!

The students will be excited and pleased, and most of all, have an experience (and a product) that will stay with them forever!”

  • Artful Dodgers!

    Funded Nov 17, 2020

Thank you for your generous donation to my project. "Artful Dodgers!" The funding allowed art materials to be placed in the hands of children who sorely needed a respite from academics! I appreciate your thoughtfulness and willingness to help kids remember how much enjoyment they can have at home - that does not involve a screen or device. The special pencil cases were rewards for children who sustained their engagement during synchronous learning. This, I'm hopeful, will motivate other students to persevere in this challenging Distance Learning model.

As we enter the holiday break, these supplies will help to keep young minds stimulated and as the children draw, sketch, color, and create, they'll understand that they are cared for, and that someone has thought of them having fun!”

    With gratitude,

    Dr. Malloy

  • Friends For Friends!

    Funded Oct 14, 2019

These are hard days for us all~ the social and political climates are complicated and dreary; the reality of poverty that plagues the neighborhood in which my school is nestled is both curious and disheartening, the glum outlook for true equity looms large in the minds of all who are disenfranchised; and the weaponized culture of our angry and morose young people shake rattle and roll our young students, - but yet, we still as teachers have the magic to make [almost all of] it go away.

The materials will serve in that purpose. The Friendship Bench will stand as a beacon for those children who need or want to make a friend. This innocuous piece of outdoor furniture will reduce loneliness, bullying, depression, and conflict on the playground. Without an instruction book, it's almost innate that children will flock to this bench to extend their hand or invitation to someone who may look like they need this gesture of kindness. The speakers, copied with the computer, will play uplifting and cheerful songs for the children as they play in the morning, and perhaps, even during recess.s

Thank you for helping to make this world a less scary place.”

  • Not Fake News!

    Funded Mar 27, 2018

The incredible generosity you've chosen to bestow upon my vision is indeed appreciated. Without your dedication to education. teachers such as myself would be bereft of options to create fun and engaging classrooms. School districts are strapped and it is often the classroom teacher who must make up the financial difference to ensure that children are provided with extra-curricular activities. These activities require materials that are usually not part of the district's allotment. From simple supplies such as whiteboard markers - to advanced materials such as laptops for the students - teachers are paying, and paying often.

Thank you for choosing to give. Your gift and your sharing allows me to bring my students into a technology=based set of lessons with gusto. Your gift allows students to be equally outfitted with their peers from more affluent schools. Your gift raises the self-esteem for kids who can now participate in ways they've perhaps only dreamed out. Your gift pushes learning, and instills hope, not only for students who will now have the accouterments that should be issued, but also for teachers who can rally and expand and supplant the "regular" with the sublime!

I am hopeful that your own success is continued and augmented, knowing that you are integral to a child's success. We as teachers as sometimes in awe of how we are able to touch lives and mold futures- you are now in that elite group of individuals who has helped to propel a child to pursue their goals, and you have helped to touch a destiny!

    Thank you, so very much!

    A grateful teacher~

  • Our Feathered Friends

    Funded Mar 9, 2017

Thank you so very much for your kind and generous donations. I've told students that the Feathered Friends Bird Watching Club will commence very soon, and the interest from students has been overwhelmingly positive! Students of all grade levels are intrigued and looking forward to the first meeting and the maiden bird-watching expedition around our campus. We'd just completed our weekly Book Club after school program, so being funded for this next after school project so quickly, was a coup.

Your funding allows me to engage students in an activity that is nuanced, as bird-watching as a hobby is not common among my students. Additionally, no birdhouses exist on our sprawling campus, though many birds grace our school yard and playgrounds. Students will practice caring for and caring about wildlife.

Opening this window of nature to my students is wonderful, as exposure is the key to a student's grasp of a broadened life experience. My students deserve every advantage, and this new and exciting after-school venture will be a special adventure. The students have seen the materials arrive, and see them unpacked in the class room, and are intrigued. They are especially eager to use the materials - the binoculars and birdhouses are drawing crowds!

My students and I thank you again for your support in bringing about another option for consideration as students begin to think about their careers and future. We here at Martin Luther King Elementary are appreciative and grateful that people like you exist in the world.”

  • Starry, Starry Night

    Funded Oct 17, 2016

I am always amazed at the the generosity of strangers. When projects such as mine are funded, the effect is widespread and, it has a ripple effect. Children benefit in the immediacy of experiencing the benefits the products being supplied- in our case-a fine telescope and astronomy binoculars, so that they are now learning in a hands-on way about the world above them. But their special experiences are multiplied by the lasting effect of their participation. My students will take their new-found understanding of the moon, stars, constellations, and planets and tell their sibling and parents and grandparents and other loved ones. Perhaps their exuberance will spill over into one or more of my students graduating from an aero-space program, or discovering new bodies in the galaxy. At the very least, the children now have resources that make these events possible, and at best, the children are equitably outfitted to compete with students who have far more resources. My students have access to a whole new world - thanks to the kind donations of individuals and corporations like you. Thank you again for your foresight in providing a basis for students to excel and delve into discovery and wonder!”

  • Sweet Spot!

    Funded Sep 2, 2016

Sweet Spot~ known in tennis as the place where, if a ball impacts the racquet at the sweet spot, the force transmitted to the hand is so sufficiently small that the player is almost unaware that the impact has occurred. The impact learning and playing tennis will be similar to that sports phenomena. From the physical benefits of playing tennis ( agility, aerobic and cardiovascular fitness while maintaining higher energy levels, bone strength and density by strengthening bones of young players and helping prevent osteoporosis in older ones, immune system through its conditioning effects that promote overall health, fitness and resistance to disease, etc.) to the psychological benefits like focus, work ethic, discipline and responsibility - this project being funded has long -lasting effects that are almost subtle. Best of all, though, is that all of the benefits associated with tennis translate into stronger, more confident children who perform better in school. Tennis Club- is what we're calling it! - is a motivator and a lot of fun.

The children were so excited to receive the items! The smaller tennis racquets fit perfectly in the students' hands, and the easy assembly and set-up of the net proved to be exceptionally helpful to have quick beginnings, allowing us to utilize our Tennis club time actually practicing.

Thank you again, sole donator, for seeing the worth of giving so generously to our project! We appreciate you and please know that we're enjoying our Sweet Spot!”

  • Empowering Children Through Art - The Documentary Project!

    Funded Mar 9, 2016

Ready? Quiet on the set. And.....action!

These were probably the favorite seven words of the 28 kids who were involved in the Documentary Project! Though these words are neither exotic nor complex, these words had an entirely new meaning when used in the context of this project. Kids were Empowered.

What is the impact? There were myriad ways that the doc project changed lives. Students had ownership. Students learned a new way to use technology. Students broadened their vocabulary. Students learned how to problem solve on the spot. Students practiced skills of collaboration. Students shared compassion. Students shared laughter and questions and role playing. Students gained confidence. Students honed focus. Students explored tolerance and

The students involved in the Documentary project were from grades kindergarten through fifth. We made two short films. The first was an Interview documentary. Students were invited by flier to participate, and were released from their various classes to be in the Documentary Project class. Because this project would involve reading and writing as a prerequisite to scripting and interviewing, it fit perfectly into many of the Common Core standards for ELA (English Language Arts)across grade level.

As a group, during this ELA (English Language Arts) time for the grades, which was in the morning part of the school day, we worked on interview questions. Then, we assigned roles and positions, duties and Younger students were assigned to interview older students. All were filmed.

The second project was an action film/documentary: "An Awesome Day at MLK!"

Along with learning the technicalities of using the equipment (the GoPro camera being the favorite), the kids learned how to produce a final product that they'd never produced before! The kids had so much confidence and as a finale, we plan to share both projects on our digital boards for all to see.

This project had far-reaching results as well. One parent related that their child now considered themself a "director," and was now aware of the word "director" when watching movies at home. Some kids expressed interest in the movie industry as actors, filmmakers, directors, and camera people. Wee researched these roles, as well as stunt people producers, etc. (By the way, we now want to buy a green screen)!

What a great time! Thank you so very much DonorsChoosse and Kind Donors for making this possible. We could not have done it without you”

Most of the children in my school toil under dire circumstances: poverty, a less-than-safe neighborhood, instances of "broken homes," exposure to substance abuse, neglect, gangs and domestic violence - and yet continue to strive to gain ground academically. The students are special and unique in that, though many of them witness ridiculous amounts of tragedy and live in unforgivable arenas of trauma, there's still a inner sense of hope and innocent belief that school - for many, their safe place- is important. For many of the families, education is still touted as a viable ticket out of the abyss of hopelessness. Urban schools are always hardest hit by economic lows, and without the proper resources, it is truly more difficult for students to have the opportunity to overcome all that befalls them, daily.
