I am currently a speech-language pathologist in a high needs school district, without a budget to purchase materials. These children deserve the same learning opportunities as every other child! I service 52 children, each with their own individual needs. Many of these students are in special education and are non-verbal. Every day, they struggle to effectively communicate basic wants/needs (i.e., being hungry, going to the bathroom, requesting items, refusing items). These are functions we often take fore granted! They require creative, interactive, and sensory stimulating learning materials to reach their speech and communication goals. These materials are essential in providing them with naturalistic learning scenarios to elicit functional communication. Every child deserves the opportunity to reach their full communication potential. With access to materials more appropriate for their ages and disabilities, these children can make tremendous gains toward reaching speech and language goals. More importantly, they can learn to express basic wants and needs to peers, teachers, and parents, allowing them to become more independent.
