  • A Book a Day Keeps Boredom Away

    Funded Aug 30, 2022

The decodable books you helped pay for have been crucial in our instruction. The students use them to reinforce the skills taught. The book's sequential nature allow students to practice their phonics abilities. By practicing repeated orthographic patterns, students strengthen their visual memory. The decodable texts help build reading fluency, but more importantly they foster independence and ultimately confidence in our students.

It is with heartfelt gratitude that I write this thank you note. In a perfect world, education funds would be unlimited, but since it's not, people like you have made our teaching possible!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Hughes

  • Newspapers Are Still Around? They Are in our Classroom!

    Funded Sep 26, 2019

This Scholastic News is such an integral part of our daily classroom teaching. The students use it EVERY DAY! Whether reading the high interest articles or watching videos and taking polls on the Scholastic website, the students are engaged.

Scholastic News is much more than a magazine for reading. We use sentences from the articles as mentor sentences. These well-written sentences are used to teach grammar skills. The age-appropriate debate in every issue is the platform we use for the students to write an opinion piece. The 'words to know" in each issue are used to expand their vocabulary. We use the infographics and non-fiction text features to reinforce text structure and main idea.

Because of your generosity, we were able to fund the subscription for the entire grade. This means that teachers can use the quizzes, writing topics, and graphic organizers for common assessments. With the ability to listen to the issue online or provide a student with a different level cover story, all students are able to read and enjoy the magazine.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Hughes

  • What Do Games and Vocabulary Have in Common?

    Funded Apr 21, 2019

Wow! What a difference these games have made! My EL students have been coming to class, begging to play our new games! The students are learning while having fun. They are learning cooperation, problem-solving, and teamwork along with learning new vocabulary words and practicing their reading comprehension skills.

The colorful, engaging games have been well received by all grade levels. The game bundle included games for both upper and lower elementary age children. The readings that they have to do are relevant and timely. The games are a hit with all of the students!

This Donors Coos donation has been such a blessing for me and my students, and I can't thank you enough for your generosity.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Hughes

  • What? We Need More Words to Write!?

    Funded Sep 6, 2018

Words are not enough to express the gratitude I have for your generosity. Your funding this project has had such a powerful impact on my students. They are loving the independence they have when they are writing, and the Time for Kids has helped my students practice close reading on high interest, current events.

My students have become empowered during the writing process. No longer are they waiting on me to spell a word for them, nor are they intimidated to try to write using a broader vocabulary. The book is so loved by my students that they often enjoy just reading all the words in it!

The Time for Kids magazine is perfect for my students. The bright, colorful pictures and current, high-interest articles keep my students engaged during sustained reading time. The non-fiction text features such as sidebars and captions provide them with opportunities to practice reading alternate ways to gain information. The evidence based questions are a wonderful follow up to ensure comprehension.

    Thank you Donors!!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Hughes

Spanish, French, Vietnamese, and Arabic are all spoken at home by the students in my classroom. These bi-lingual kids learned English as a second language. As a native English speaker, I know how difficult it is to fully understand our language! These amazing kids navigate two or more cultures, and do so successfully. Often, however, these children are an underserved population. Many are dual identified as ESOL students and special education students.
