Good Listeners Make Good Readers
Funded Sep 27, 2023Thank you so much for your kind contribution to my Donors Choose project "Good Listeners Make Good Readers!" The money you sent was used to purchase sets of headphones for my class and the other 5th grade classes in our school!
Because of your donation, my students will be able to listen to lessons on their computers while they are reading, giving them the support of HEARING the words while they are seeing them. This double exposure will strengthen their understanding of words and help them comprehend the stories they read.
Thank you again for making this possible for the students of PS 88! They are enjoying having their own set of headphones to use, and they love the pretty colors they come in.”

Funded Jan 26, 2018I want to thank each of you for your contributions to my project. My students are so happy with the variety of books we now have in our social studies library. We have independent reading time 3 times a week. During this time the children are able to pick the books they want to read and they always reach for the biographies and history books that we were able to receive through our project.
The children love reading about people who have made great contributions to our world such as those whose stories are part of the "Who Am I?' series. I have had to start a waiting list for some of the books because so many children want to read them!
It's wonderful to hear them having discussions inspired by the books! Thank you again for your generous involvement!”

Funded Jun 27, 2016My students have enjoyed learning by reading these incredible biographies. They are kid-friendly books that even struggling readers can understand. The stories of how these people persevered and reached their goals have been inspiring to my class. Certain kids have really enjoyed connecting their lives to the lives of the people they read about. One boy from Egypt was thrilled to read and write about King Tut! Another who likes to cook presented about Julia Child!
Thank you so much for contributing to my project!”

The Best Me I Can Be!
Funded Nov 13, 2015I want to thank everyone who made it possible for us to conduct the Best Me I Can Be workshops at PS 88. Parents, students and teachers came together and shared learning experiences through fun activities! The parents interacted with their children in ways they had never thought to, and the children responded with smiles, giggles, hugs, words and confidence!
The books and materials we were able to receive through the generous donations allowed the parents and children to work together, using teamwork and literacy-based activities to understand behavioral expectations. This brought into play a new sense of confidence in the parents and a new level of trust in the children that was amazing to see!”

Who Am I ? Who Can I Be? Biography Presentations
Funded Jun 6, 2015I would like to thank you all and share how your donation has helped enhance learning in my classroom.
My students are wonderful kids with a desire to learn and make something of their lives. They often need to rely on the information they read in books to know what possibilities there are for success in their future. Being able to hold these biography books from the "Who Am I?" series in their hands, to choose from a number of titles about successful people from all walks of life, and to see how other people worked hard and were able to do well gave them hope for their own lives.
With all of the 50 life stories to inspire them, they created reports about their heroes and made connections to how they themselves could find such success. As they read their own books and heard the speeches of their classmates about the other folks, they were filled with optimism and excitement!”

Never Too Early to Learn!
Funded Oct 24, 2014I want to thank everyone for the generous contribution to our project. The students were thrilled to see the books we were using and immediately wanted to read them! One boy said to the parents involved "please come again and bring more books! Come back in an hour!"
The students are using the resources...books and learning games, music Cd's and manipulatives........ to enrich their learning. They are being exposed to words, numbers, stories and letters. They and their parents are realizing that learning happens during a lot of fun activities! We will continue to use the resources in additional workshops that will bring parents and children together.
The variety of items we were able to order is bringing a world of new experiences to the children. All kinds of learners are having the opportunity to be successful. The kids are engaged in the activities we are teaching because they are excited to use the new things.”
