Approximately 75% of the children at our Southern California school are below poverty level. The majority of our students are learning English as a second language. Most are below or far below grade level, due to socio-economic reasons. Research has shown that at risk students benefit from working collaboratively in pairs. Since we began using white boards, my 4th and 5th grade students have been excelling in math. It is not only a way for them to show what they know, but it is a quick assessment for me that lets me know who is getting it and who needs more help.
