My project will provide needed supplies and opportunities for the children in our school and show them that science and math is everywhere around them. My students need a laptop computer to assist them with this "Science Environmental" project. I want my students to be able to learn about science and enhance their language skills through hands-on experiences. I want my students to have these experiences and love learning. I will be incorporating sustainable energy themed units into our therapy sessions. I teach a wonderful group of students! Unfortunately, our school is located in a low income area with 100% of the students receiving free lunch. Many of the students come from single parent families, families with only one parent working. Electricity is an integral part of our daily lives, but many energy sources are damaging the environment. I plan to have my students read about innovations in alternative energy sources. They will work in groups to compare and contrast models of systems which generate energy. Each student will then present their chosen design to the group. Next, the students will use their alternative energy design at home with their family and discuss other ways to conserve energy. The instructional activity finishes with everyone discussing the importance of renewable energy resources and what they did at home with their family to conserve energy. In order to carry out this unit, my students need a computer to research various energy sources and how they might sustain energy.
