Modeling is a critical technique for teaching struggling readers and writers. They need to see examples of what good readers and writers do in order to be able to employ the same strategies and techniques independently and successfully. First, I like to model for my students, then have my students collaborate on an example, and finally release them to try the strategy on their own when they are ready. I am requesting a high definition document camera that will allow me to model good habits of reading and writing in real time and on real texts and papers. Students will be able to see me model how to annotate and mark news articles, work to organize my ideas when reading and writing, and even edit my own writing. A document camera will not only allow me to be able to project teacher models, but students will also be able to proudly display their work as a model for class discussion and to build our classroom community and collaboration.
