I want you to take a moment and think about how you learned math. Were you able to sit there silently and listen to a teacher talk at you for 90 minutes straight or do you need brain breaks and time to process through hands-on activities? I know for me, it was the latter. Unfortunately, with a lack of supplies/resources, many of our kiddos are unable to participate in hands-on activities that would help them to internalize topics more quickly (while having so much more fun). Our goal is to increase our love of math and reach an average of 85% mastery in all math standards. To do that we need supplies like composition books, paper, pencils, metersticks, washi tape, laminiating pouches, dry erase pockets and glue sticks. I know these may seem basic but without these basic supplies, things like interactive journals are just not sustainable. Additionally having our own set of headphones, dry erase boards, and meter sticks will allow my students to maximize their engagement while doing centers and reduce the amount of waste from having to print out so many worksheets. These past months I have seen the impact that hands-on lessons have with my students. By making math more engaging I am confident that we will be able to reach our goal and build their math comprehension!
