  • Transforming Students and Bacteria Through Science!

    Funded Sep 19, 2018

First of all, thank you so much for your support. My students, my district, and I are very humbled by your generosity. My Pre-AP Biology classes really had a wonderful time creating the sucrose solutions that were mixed in the Pyrex bottles for my AP Biology class. They were really excited when they got to make them different colors and I explained how AP Biology was going to try to guess which solutions had the most sucrose based on water movement across the membranes. My AP Biology class did a wonderful job using the hot plates to create the agar plates to grow bacteria. They were very successful in transforming the bacteria with jellyfish plasmids. They were able to create a genetically modified organism using our classroom equipment and the BioRad DNA Transformation kit provided through our DonorsChoose project. This DNA transformation was also used as a demonstration and example for my regular Biology and Pre-AP Biology classes. They were all very impressed to see a real example of a GMO and were able to relate that to other examples of how humans use bacteria. Thank you again for your impact in my classroom.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Johnson

  • AP Biology Criminal Investigation

    Funded Nov 1, 2017

We would like to thank you for supporting and believing in us. Having the support of our community is very important to our school, our classmates, our teachers, and ourselves. We were able to have the opportunity to use real-life scientific skills that not all high schoolers are able to experience. We were able to set up the equipment, pour the gels, load the DNA samples using micropipettes, and separate the bands using electricity. We successfully were able to read the bands to determine who had certain traits. Because of your generosity, the AP Biology students next year will be able to use the additional DNA not used this year to conduct this lab as well.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Johnson

I love my "job", my students, and my district. I teach in a district that has a low socioeconomic status and high diversity. My students are amazing and I look forward to being around them, they inspire me. I see so much potential and I love the excitement in their eyes when we are learning about life (Biology class). I want my students to know that I believe in them and they have so much potential that I push them because I want to see them succeed. It's always a great day to be a Leopard!
