Having a wide variety of young adult novels that are not only engaging and fun to read, but appropriate on a lexile level will allow all of my students to flourish as readers. Creating a varied and engaging in-class library will allow my students to read books that they truly cherish and enjoy so that they can become lifelong readers. Several of these book series, such as Le Guin's Earthsea Cycle, A Wrinkle in Time, and Hi Dark Materials, are not only classic young adult books that we don't have in our library, but books whose themes align with the texts that I'll be teaching later in the year. Other books, such as The Hate U Give, are current young adult novels that are highly relevant to today's political climate, and align to the other classes my students are taking this year (specifically Seminar and World Geography). In my ELA class, every student spends the first 20 minutes of their time reading a book that they want to read. I want to give them as many opportunities as possible to expand their literacy and their love of reading. Students also have a literacy tracker for their JRBs (just right books) to allow them to see how many books they've read this year, set goals for the future, and earn Trailblazer marks that can be put towards future trips and prizes.
