The majority of our students are second language learners that do not have access to high quality literature at home. My project consists of six class sets of literature books that vary by reading level and genre. With a high level of second language learners, these books will be used to encourage writing, reading, speaking and listening. Our school has a forty-five minute block of time set up daily to work specifically on these four areas. These literature sets would provide access to books that will open the eyes of our students to realize what things are beyond their front door. Literature encourages critical thinking in the minds of our students. When we read, we make connections and find themes. Reading expands all of these skills, which then leads to the areas of speaking, writing, and listening. When we combine history and literature, students will learn about the past, their families, and their people who came before us. These books will also provide an opportunity to learn about cultures other than their own. It will build an appreciation for other cultures and beliefs.
