In my classroom, we are constantly using glue, scissors, and markers to create our learning tools. In all of my classes, students use their interactive notebooks to hold foldables/flippables, infographics, and models that they use to understand and remember all that we are learning. Thanks to the use of scissors, markers, and glue, our interactive notebooks are vibrant and engaging! Students are also able to use a four function calculator to assist in their calculations. Unfortunately, the use of these materials comes at the cost of the time it takes to gather supplies and the time it takes to find a working calculator. These toolkits would mean fewer supplies on our classroom floor, and would give me the opportunity to ensure that all students have equal access to participating in activities. These activities really cement understanding and engage students more than just a lecture or practicing out of a textbook, but if a student spends the first five minutes of class looking for a marker or a non-dried-out glue stick, they have already missed out on the beginning of instruction. I believe these toolkits will help my students fully focus on what we are learning, rather than on gathering up the tools we are using.
