The America rug will be used every day in both my reading and Social Studies classes. The rug will serve as a meeting place to do our whole group lessons. Whole group lessons are focused on students' fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension in reading class. The rug can also serve as a warm and inviting area for the children to sit on while completing their work. They will be allowed to sit and work on the rug during independent work time. Currently students are having to sit on the tile floor or at a table. For most students this is not comfortable and therefore they are not productive. In Social Studies we will use the rug when we have to read about a new concept and when we are practicing a new skill with a game. At least once a week we have a classroom meeting where we learn correct ways to interact with others and how to become problem solvers. A classroom rug will help with this because it will create the boundaries of our circle so that every student can be seen and heard during the meeting. This is a key aspect of the Positive Discipline model I use in my classroom.
