In the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, children--especially teenagers--are suffering from depression, anxiety, and isolation at record rates. Despite their increased struggles, I have watched in wonder as these students respond enthusiastically to my revamped creative writing class. The class offers students a way to process--with full artistic freedom--the challenges they, our society, and our community have faced in the last few years and continue to face. They in particular have been drawn to writing poetry and writing narratives about their own life, losses, disappointments, and interior experiences. This interest has caused the creative writing program to balloon to about 200 students. To continue making our room a refuge of creativity and wonder, consider supporting the expansion of our classroom library, with a particular focus on poets. The requested books include spoken word poets, Native American poets, poets of color, teenager poets, and poets from other countries in an effort to help students leverage their own experience and stretch the limits of language. The games, conversation cards, and prompts will help students both connect with each other and themselves through this process of creation. Help us foster a very special writing community--one student has never needed more than right now.
