Our school theme for the 2020-2021 school year is DIVERSITY. Not only do we want our students to feel represented in our classroom, but we also want to be able to teach our students about diversity and the importance of it. Our classroom is made up of a diverse group of learners. Adding diverse books to our classroom library will allow our students the opportunity to feel represented in books we are offering them. Many of our students celebrate and respect their own diverse backgrounds, as well as each other’s. When appropriate, We encourage students to learn about different ethnic and cultural backgrounds. This allows them to better understand their own culture as well as the differences with their peers. As a bonus, this can be a great ice breaker, allowing our students to give presentations about their family traditions and culture to help expose the class to concepts outside of their own familiar comfort zone. Acknowledging these differences and creating a safe space for discussion helps promote understanding in the classroom and beyond. Also, as we encourage students to learn about their diverse backgrounds, they can also learn how to talk about other cultures in a respectful way. This is essential for success in life outside the classroom. Seeing themselves represented in the books in our classroom library will help our students to feel more at home at school. Having a diverse library will also teach our students about loving and accepting others, no matter their background or skin color. In addition, adding skin color crayons and markers to our classroom will allow students the opportunity to create themselves in their drawings and creations.
