My students will learn the basics of lighting engineering and will work in small collaborative groups to learn how to create and engineer special effects for theatrical performances. Groups will be building and installing a DMX lighting system in our school’s black box theater. Students will learn to correctly calculate voltage versus wattage output and find the correct current pull on the theater’s electrical grid. They will learn how to use AutoCAD drafting software to create a digital electrical schematic plot. Finally, students will learn to how to take the science of lighting engineering to use creatively as a form of expression. This project will allow students to look past the science and mathematics of electricity and see a creative real-world application and viable career in the arts which is why I am requesting cables, clamps, a wireless transmitter, and lights.
