Creative Memories
Funded Mar 26, 2022From the bottom of my heart, thank you for believing in us to do something good with your trust and hard-earned donations. I pray that you will continue supporting us in the future once you see the outcome of the goals we have planned now. You are the real heroes to these amazing students.”

Precious Moments
Funded Oct 16, 2019I want to thank you for your generosity and faith. Without you, my students would not be able to boldly pursue our vision. My students see how valuable these tools are for their photo projects. We are transferring our images onto a computer and then onto a flashdrive so that our families can keep these memories with them. Most of my students are visual learners, so these types of visual projects really help make activities such as this more meaningful.
Our class has decided to visit the sites where Collete Miller and others have painted Angel Wing Murals near us here in Santa Monica, or near accessible spots in Los Angeles. Our students individually snap photos of their paraeducators standing alone under the wings, and the paraprofessionals snap high quality photos of their students to signify that they are each other's angels during these short moments we have together.
All of my students have gravitated towards what our main purpose is using this technology, which is to go beyond their comfort zone and contribute/participate the most each person can to help produce a class yearbook and digital photobook.”

Funded Apr 26, 2019I wanted to apologize for the delay in stating the impact this project has made in closing out the school year. The photobooks came out so great and the parents loved them. We allowed students to pick out 80 of their favorite instax photos and design their own photobooks to take with them as lasting memories.
Students also helped scan each of the instax photos on an iPad and categorized where the photos took place so that they could be transferred onto a flashdrive, which they also took home.
The beanbag chair has allowed for us to have some more flexible seating. My students use it every single day for various reasons including leisure activities, stretching, etc.
Thank you for the opportunity to give these amazing students some awesome things to look forward to coming to school for.”

Funded Nov 18, 2018My students and I have already begun the process of making the most out of this project. We have snapped several photos before the end of the Christmas season, standing in front of a giant tree at the Santa Monica Place mall. The students who enjoy fidgets have found the fidget spinner to be a great medium to continue messing around with. So much so that we have purchased more from Amazon for a few other students to try. In addition, the Wonder cart is so handy when we are doing our weekly grocery shopping. The wheels allow us to traverse through off-road type conditions that are typically found around construction zones.
My students did not know what to expect opening these boxes. Since the last project dealt with technology, I am guess they were a little disappointed that more tablets did not appear. However, judging from the amount of practicality from this project it is important to notice the usefulness of how these items apply in making our classroom projects more meaningful and accommodating for the needs that some of my students may have.
We are going to continue taking group and individual photos with the instax camera. We will be using the iPad to take each individual shot and save them onto a digital medium. Then we will organize these digital photos by months and by events. Thank you for the support!”

Replace Our Stolen Laptops
Funded Oct 17, 2018Thanks to your generosity, our class is now equipped to do small group technology sessions, where students can use similar mediums to traverse through programs or apps that are applicable to a student's needs and wants. Our class participated in the Hour of Power coding activity where students were familiarized with the basics of how video games operate and they even learned how to play a few for themselves. Each student had a tablet or had a chance at the Smartboard to interact and try it out. The iPad itself is extraordinarily useful becomes there are a few free Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) apps, such as GoTalkNow which we are using to help one of my students meet her goals of greeting someone. She will begin with practicing the mechanics, and then will generalize into greeting others who have their picture in the gallery and as a picture icon on her greeting page.
These low cost ways of further reaching a student's potential is partially what makes having technology so useful, because acquiring them is no easy feat. My students are excited because their teacher delivered with access to ways to communicate or meet some of their needs through a wonderful organization like Donor's Choose and through the kindness of awesome donors such as yourself. Another way to communicate will be opening the app, "Pages", creating a document and to use the device's keyboard to try and convey using emojis (CUE).
All my students have shown immense interest in the tablets. It is truly an upgrade to the stolen computers which they struggled using, except for those that could type. We will be taking certain class-related pictures on our upcoming events and are planning to use the storage space on the iPad to create a digital yearbook for the students to possess as a flashdrive at the end of the school year.”

Funded May 4, 2018We plan to utilize the shredder as a vocational task, where students will be given prompts and instruction until they can just be supervised to shred unused documents and expired credit cards. These skills are often implemented in an office setting. In addition, the Brita filters will be another task that students can engage in. Understanding when and how to change a filter could definitely be a life skill worth pursuing for the sake of generalizing other skills. The wipes are used for the purpose of sanitization before and after school because of mucus buildup and cleaning surfaces that we work on.
Our students seem curious about how the shredder will be implemented in our daily routine.”

Life Cycles and Life Skills
Funded Apr 18, 2018Thank you so much for your generosity. We were able to house the entire life cycle of several butterflies and experience the joy of letting them go once they were ready. We did a community trip to the Santa Monica Garden and found a wonderful sponsor to house our butterflies. This was a wonderful project.
My students got to witness each stage of the life cycle with their own eyes. More importantly, they were able to engage and interact with the project and I have found them more eager to participate in other types of activities around the areas of science or using visual supports.
I am truly grateful that there are people that care about students enough to support projects like these. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.”

Support Program Implementation for Styer-Fitzgerald Curriculum
Funded Mar 15, 2018Thank you again for your wonderful contribution. Due to your support, I have created a portfolio for each of my students and set up space for the hanging file folders. These hanging files will house the pages of the program masters which includes data sheets, lesson implementation guides, and assessment materials. The Styer-Fitzgerald curriculum is designed to better meet the needs of students with moderate-to-severe needs by offering functional academics and skill tasks.
Although my students did not directly notice your generosity, they are immediately benefiting from it. Our campus generously made 10 copies of each of the 192 pages of the program masters so we could begin filling our hanging files folders. They accidentally stapled each section together, which encompass around 2-3 pages per staple. So, we have taken this as a learning experience and a few of my students are now helping sort stacks of pages after we remove the staples. It has been extremely fun!
The next steps are to implement the curriculum for the students that have completed their initial assessments and to complete the assessments for the others. We will immediately use your resources to compile what we have worked on into a beautiful portfolio. You are truly appreciated!!”

Mr. Hyon
A Colorful Existence
Funded Oct 30, 2017The technology that you have helped us have in the classroom has basically changed the way lessons are taught, prepared, and how my students are interacting with independent activities. The touchscreen monitor allows students with limited fine-motor skills to stay engaged with online content and interact with educational computer programs. Already, I am witnessing students stay engaged longer and some of my students are even showing more independence by being able to navigate through activities with less and less prompting needed. The touchscreen monitor really expands their comfort zone with interacting on technological devices. They really love how easy it is to use the touchscreen monitor. It makes using a computer so much easier and builds upon the attention span and focus that my students need to practice more on. This has also impacted my student's level of confidence in themselves and how they have the confidence to socialize with others. A few of my students have truly warmed to this new technology because they know that this is the best way anyone has shown them how to interact with technology. They know what to do with the monitor, how to navigate deeper through an activity and how to exit.
As for the amazing economically-efficient color printer. Words cannot describe how much my class has been impacted. We are now able to laminate color picture icons and my students are responding more enthusiastically to them. One example is that we use a picture icon schedule. Another example is we use picture icons to help students understand ingredients in a cooking recipe. For nonverbal students, this really helps my instruction. I have been catching up with things I need to print and I am so grateful to have this workhorse of a printer. The printing machine I was given when I began here ran out of toner and when I went to ask for a refill, the school told me they only had toner for HP printers. Thanks to your generosity, I have a printer fully equipped to economically make color copies, scan documents, and print meaningful materials for students that truly deserve more color in their lives.
Thank you thank you thank you, so very very much.”
